On Day Four of the Twelve Days of Knitmas MKAL, we’ll work Estonian Shell Lace, which is very similar to Broomstick Lace.
It involves some stitches that may be new to you, so I recorded a video that covers each step along the way.
PLEASE NOTE: I accidentally used the CC for the Shell Stitch (rnd 7) when recording the video.
The pattern is correct as written and calls for the MC for the Shell Stitch (rnd 7).

I worry that in putting the cowl on and off that earrings, rings, zippers etc will get caught in the loose dropped stitches.

That’s always a risk with knitwear, isn’t it?! I, too, worry when I’m wearing large jewelry. The good news is, this cowl has a circumference of about 29″, so it shouldn’t be an issue. Also, those dropped stitches aren’t very loose once blocked. I hope that helps!
The tutorial shows row 7 in CC but the pattern shows row 7 in MC. Which is correct?
I got my answer. I guess rows 7, 14 and 21 are to be done in MC, as per the pattern. Apparently I missed seeing the disclaimer about the video. Good thing I was only finished row 7 when I noticed the discrepancy between the video and pattern.

Oops, I did 7 in a CC color. I guess I still have 14 and 21 to look forward to doing in MC because rows 1-7 came out so well that I am not taking it out 🤩
