Alterknit Rebellion – An Interview with Anna Bauer

News

Hey there, knitting enthusiasts! I’ve got an exciting new (to me) book and author interview to share with you.

Alterknit Rebellion is a collection of knitting patterns so bright and bold, they’ll make your yarn stash blush with envy. But here’s the twist – these patterns are inspired by Hønsestrik, a Danish knitting movement from the 1970s.

Hønsestrik, loosely translated as ‘chicken stitch’ or ‘hen knitting’ (yes, you read that right), is a rebellious knitting movement that kicked traditional rules to the curb. Imagine knitting with a side of revolution! 🐔💥

Alterknit Rebellion Book

Hønsestrik was influenced by the women’s rights movements and political upheaval of the ’70s. You can see these bold messages woven right into some of the patterns. Forget about your usual fair isle colorwork; Hønsestrik was all about in-your-face political messages with bold patterns and borders, all in a riot of color.

Hønsestrik isn’t just about knitting and politics; it’s about freeing your knitting spirit. It’s about expressing yourself in a way that’s as unique as your yarn collection. Designer Anna Bauer was so inspired by this knitting movement that she assembled a collection of basic designs and patterns. The result? You get to pick and choose, mix and match, and create your very own free-spirited, rebellious knits. 🧶✌️

ANNA Bauer Interview 2

Becky: Hi, Anna! Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself?
Anna: I am a dedicated knitter and textile artist with an MFA in Textile Art, living in Gothenburg, Sweden. I have a studio at Konstepidemin –  an old epidemic hospital – in Gothenburg.
In my free time, I like to grow things in my allotment garden and hang out with my dog, Frasse.
Becky: What inspired you to write this book?

Anna: The knitting style ”Hønsestrik” was my main inspiration for writing this book. Hönsestrik is a way to approach free knitting in a fun and colorful but also political way, and the opposite of the endless patterns you can download from Ravelry and other websites these days. So many pages can really be intimidating, I think!

Becky: Could you please explain Hønsestrik, the role it plays in your knitting, and, ultimately, the creation of this book?
Anna: The knitting style Hønsestrik (or in Swedish Hönsestrik) was invented by Kirsten Hofstätter in Denmark when she wrote her first book called ”Hønsestrik” in 1973. It was a huge success, and the style was widespread. Since she was active in politics and the women’s movement, knitting also became a political statement, a way to express your beliefs.
Becky: If there’s anything else you’d like to share with the readers about Hønsestrik’s history, please do!
Anna: Kirsten Hofstätter encouraged knitting with freedom as a political and personal standpoint against the consumer society, but also as a way to free oneself from the needlework of previous generations with many rules.
Becky: What is your favorite thing to knit?
Anna: For me, Hönsestrik is the ultimate way to enjoy knitting. The process is free, and you never get bored because you can choose new motifs and new colors as you knit.
Becky: What makes this book a great addition to a knitting library?
Anna: The most challenging thing about writing a knitting book, I think, is to write instructions for patterns that are instructive, easy to understand, and also give the knitter some freedom. I want to inspire and encourage knitters to trust their own creativity! When you believe in your creativity and ability to make things yourself, you can do anything!
Becky: What were the most challenging/fun parts of creating Alterknit Rebellion?
Anna: The most fun part was all the borders and motifs, and I think this is also what makes my book a great addition to every knitting library 😉
Becky: Thank you for this inspiring book! I can’t wait to choose some graphics from the charts in the back and cast on a pair of mittens.
So there you have it – a knitting journey that’s all about breaking the rules, knitting with a purpose, and showing off some seriously vibrant threads. Get ready to knit your heart out and let your inner rebel shine through with Hønsestrik-inspired creations.  😉📚
