Hey there, knitting enthusiasts! I’ve got an exciting new (to me) book and author interview to share with you.
Alterknit Rebellion is a collection of knitting patterns so bright and bold, they’ll make your yarn stash blush with envy. But here’s the twist – these patterns are inspired by Hønsestrik, a Danish knitting movement from the 1970s.
Hønsestrik, loosely translated as ‘chicken stitch’ or ‘hen knitting’ (yes, you read that right), is a rebellious knitting movement that kicked traditional rules to the curb. Imagine knitting with a side of revolution! 🐔💥
Hønsestrik was influenced by the women’s rights movements and political upheaval of the ’70s. You can see these bold messages woven right into some of the patterns. Forget about your usual fair isle colorwork; Hønsestrik was all about in-your-face political messages with bold patterns and borders, all in a riot of color.
Hønsestrik isn’t just about knitting and politics; it’s about freeing your knitting spirit. It’s about expressing yourself in a way that’s as unique as your yarn collection. Designer Anna Bauer was so inspired by this knitting movement that she assembled a collection of basic designs and patterns. The result? You get to pick and choose, mix and match, and create your very own free-spirited, rebellious knits. 🧶✌️
Anna: The knitting style ”Hønsestrik” was my main inspiration for writing this book. Hönsestrik is a way to approach free knitting in a fun and colorful but also political way, and the opposite of the endless patterns you can download from Ravelry and other websites these days. So many pages can really be intimidating, I think!
