This year’s Season of the Witch pattern is a shawl for the darkening season, when the leaves burst into flame on their way to a winter’s rest.
A single gradient yarn works its way across a solid backdrop, creating fireflowers, a constellation of stars, and a gothic lace border, all worked flat from a garter tab cast-on.
Watching the gradient shift throughout the solid backdrop makes this simple combination of two colors - never worked at the same time - feel like its own kind of magic.
Wrap yourself up to stay cozy on your autumn adventures or throw it over your shoulders on a night when the veil is thin. ✨
📊 The pattern is both charted and written.

PATTERN DETAILS
Finished Measurements: approx. 60”/ 152cm wide and 30”/ 76cm deep, blocked.
Needles: US 8/ 5.0mm or size to obtain gauge. Use your preferred needles for working flat.
Gauge: 18 sts and 21 rows = 4”/ 10cm in stockinette, blocked. While gauge isn’t critical for this project, it will affect the size of your project and the amount of yarn used.
If you are knitting with the suggested yarn, be aware that you will use nearly all of both colors. The pattern was written to maximize yarn use in order to show off the entire gradient.
If you tend to knit loosely, you may want to go down a needle size.
Notions: stitch markers, locking stitch marker or safety pin to mark the RS of your knitting, tapestry needle, blocking supplies.
Yarn: DK weight. MC: 291 yds/ 268m CC: 217 yds/ 199m
Pair a solid with a gradient (the sample uses Black Onyx and a fiery ombre called Flare), or pick two colors with plenty of contrast.
Sample knit in:
MC: 1 skein Freia Sport (100% wool); 291 yds/ 100g in Black Onyx
CC: 1 skein Freia Sport Ombre Grande (100% wool); 217 yds/ 75g in Flare
Note: Freia Sport knits up like a DK-weight yarn. If you are substituting yarn, choose a DK-weight yarn.
