Tatters is a small, rustic cat poppet made to hold an intention in the form of a written wish, prayer, spell, hope, or enchantment.

The project begins with a basic knit rectangle. Before the final stitches are worked, you’ll write your enchantment on a tiny parchment scroll, roll it tightly, and encircle it with a golden ring. The scroll is placed inside an herbal sachet containing herbs traditionally associated with love and luck, then tucked inside your poppet along with wool stuffing.

You’ll use embroidery floss and assorted embellishments to add eyes, markings, symbols, whiskers - whatever curious details bring meaning to your Tatters poppet.

Whether you approach the project as a spell, a prayer, a creative ritual, or simply a fun bit of handwork, Tatters keeps your intention safely tucked among the stitches.

PATTERN DETAILS

Size: Your completed Tatters the Cat poppet will be approximately 2.5”/ 6.25cm wide and 3.5”/ 8.75cm tall. A tiny nugget of magical delight. ✨

Gauge: 8 sts and 12 rnds = 2”/ 5cm in Stockinette Stitch in the round.

Gauge isn’t crucial, but it will affect the size of your project and amount of yarn used.

Please note that working in a looser gauge may result in the stuffing showing through your knitting.

Needles: US 8/ 5mm or size to obtain gauge, in your preferred needle for working in the round, plus an extra needle in the same size to complete the three needle bind-off.

I suggest a 20-30”/ 50-75cm circular needle and a DPN, three DPNs, or two circular needles.

Notions: tapestry needle, embroidery needle (optional).

Yarn: bulky weight; 120 yards/ 110m/ 100g.

This project uses approx. 10 yards/ 9m of yarn.

I love a rustic, woolly yarn for this project, but any bulky weight yarn that allows you to get close-ish to gauge will work. As long as you’re happy with the fabric it creates, and it can hold the stuffing, you’re good to go!

You will also need the following materials if you choose to enchant your Tatters the Cat Poppet:

~ Natural wool roving or polyfill for stuffing. Enchanted or not, you’ll need some kind of stuffing. 😉

~ An assortment of embellishments. You can use embroidery floss, tapestry wool, yarn scraps, sequins, and beads - whatever you have on hand!

~ A sachet to contain your choice of herbs and a wish/spell/ enchantment. This part is optional, but fun! 🌱

~ A piece of paper to write your wish/spell/enchantment on. Also optional, but why not give it a go? No previous spell-casting experience required! 📜

The Tatters the Cat Poppet Kit contains all of the above materials and is available for purchase on NomadicKnits.com.

PLEASE NOTE: The Tatters the Cat Poppet Kit includes a digital copy of the pattern.

Techniques used: Turkish cast-on, knitting in-the-round, three-needle bind-off

🎥 Tutorials: Nearly an hour of video tutorials are included in the pattern. They cover cast-on, bind-off, stuffing, shaping, and embellishing.

Tatters is not intended as a toy for babies or young children.
