What is Duplicate Stitching?
Duplicate stitching is a form of embroidery that can be used to add design motifs to a completed knitting project. Using a tapestry needle and a contrasting color of yarn, you will use simple embroidery to duplicate the knitted stitches in just about any design. Use contrasting yarn in the same base and weight for a smooth motif to match the knitted fabric, or use a fun textured yarn like mohair or slub to make it really stand out.

How to Duplicate Stitch, step by step
Step 1. Thread about 18"/45cm of yarn onto a tapestry needle.
Step 2. Identify the first stitch you wish to duplicate. It should be at the bottom of your design.
Step 3. Insert needle from back to front at the point of the V of the stitch to be duplicated. Pull needle through, leaving 3-4" tail of yarn, to be woven in later.
Step 4. Insert needle from right to left behind the shoulders of the stitch
above the one you are duplicating.
Step 5. Gently pull needle through. You will see that the right-hand leg of the stitch is now duplicated.
Step 6. Insert needle from front to back through the point of the V from Step 3. Gently pull through. You will see that the left-hand leg of the stitch is now duplicated.
Step 7. Move on to the next stitch to be duplicated, and repeat from Step 3. Work bottom to top, alternating right to left and left to right as rows are completed. Use the tip of the tapestry needle to adjust the tension as necessary.
When you are finished with your motif, cut yarn with 4"/10cm remaining and weave in ends on the wrong side.
