Our Head Over Heels KAL Starts Now!

Introducing the Head Over Heels Knit-A-Long!

We’re over-the-moon excited about the release of issue eleven : head over heels, which inspired this KAL. Our love of accessories will shine during the #HeadOverHeelsKAL, which is about ALL the Nomadic Knits accessories that we’ve published over the years.

Who: Knitters!

What: A new knitalong celebrating the release of issue eleven : head over heels! The #HeadOverHeelsKAL comes at the perfect time to knit us through the April showers while we welcome the start of spring! As the last of the snow melts and the crocuses start to pop up, my creativity overflows and my fingers start itching for a new cast-on.

Where: In our Facebook group, Knit the World, and on Instagram using #HeadOverHeelsKAL (make sure to use the hashtag in at least one post in our FB group, or at least one public post on IG to enter to win prizes).

When: Today! April 1st kicks off our #HeadOverHeelsKAL (no April fool’s joke here, it’s the real deal!), and it runs through June 1st. There’s plenty of time to whip up a hat or two, a pair of socks, or a shawl! The evenings are lasting just a bit longer every day before the light fails, and that lingering twilight is my favorite time to stitch.

Why: To be part of something fun with a wonderful group of fellow knitters, and to help us celebrate issue eleven : head over heels. It took every ounce of energy we had, and plenty we didn’t, to create and publish this beautiful keepsake knitting magazine, and we couldn’t have done it without your support, so let’s party! And as always, by “party,” we mean knit! If you’re knitting with cocktails, drink a toast to us! And we’ll drink one to you, for being here and for continuing to knit with us. Cheers!

And prizes. Of course, prizes.

How: This will be the most difficult part of the #HeadOverHeelsKAL: choosing what project to cast on first! ALL of our accessories patterns are included, from socks to hats to mitts to drink coozies to shawls to legwarmers…

Accessories make great projects as the weather warms up – it’s not hot enough to put your knitting away, but you’d rather not have a wool sweater hanging around on your lap. We have knitting patterns for a huge range of knitters from beginner to expert, with dozens in between. Every knitting pattern in issue eleven : head over heels is included. See a preview of them all here.

A few more of our favorite accessory knitting patterns:

Socks

Every issue of our creative knitting magazine has featured at least one pair of socks, and issue eleven : head over heels has six brand new sock knitting patterns!

Let’s start at the bottom, with ankle socks –

Cloudless Twilight from issue one : florida.
Knitting pattern by Melissa Kemmerer (me!)
Florida Indie yarn dyer: String Theory Colorworks

Self-striping yarn makes this a really fun knit, and they’ll fly off your needles in no time.

Sporty Shorties from issue eleven : head over heels
Knitting pattern by Melissa Kemmerer
California indie yarn dyer: Seismic Yarn & Dyeworks
These colorways are light-reactive and glow under blacklight! Hello 1990s! (Or, as I’ve been recently told by the younger generation, the late nineteen hundreds. 😲)

Short rows at the back of the ankle keep these shorties from sliding down inside your shoes.

Moving up the leg to mid-calf socks –

Hell Gate Socks are a gorgeous and advanced project. They’re incredibly fun to knit, and a great cast-on for experienced knitters.

Two blue socks in indie dyed yarn from the Plucky Knitter, in a delicately cabled knitting design from Tracie Millar of Grocery Girls knit, knitting pattern found in Nomadic Knits creative knitting magazine

Seawall Socks from issue ten : texas
Knitting pattern by Fatimah Hinds
Texas indie yarn dyer: Must Stash Yarn & Fiber

These toe-up socks are really fun to knit! Fatimah paired them with the perfect self-striping colorway. If you’ve never knit with self-striping, you should treat yourself! Each color change is exciting and it keeps you knitting just one more round all day long!

Moving further up the leg to the calf –

Luckenbach Socks from issue ten : texas
Knitting pattern by Sarah Dawn’s Designs
Texas indie yarn dyer: Gritty Knits

These wonderfully high socks are sized to fit narrow to wide calves, and also come in a mid-calf height!

We have kits in stock for this hat in the original Lazy Bee colorways, as well as a handful of other beautiful indie dyed DK colorway combinations!

Twisted from issue eleven : head over heels
Knitting pattern by Becky Beagell
New York indie dyed yarn by Cori Bea Fiber Co.

Chunky yarn makes this a quick weekend knit, and is a great first-cable project. Between the cables is the squishiest, most luscious 2×2 ribbing you can imagine, hugging your head in the best possible way.

Shawls

Three Philosophers from issue two : new york state
Knitting pattern by Laura Dobratz
New York indie dyed yarn by Spun Right Round

This fingering-weight three-color shawl features textures galore. You’ll have so much fun exploring stitch patterns and color changes as you knit beautiful row after beautiful row.

Dice of Fate from issue six : mississippi / louisiana / alabama
Knitting pattern by Willamagia Designs
Louisiana indie dyed yarn: Yellow June Fiber Company

The Dice of Fate shawl is a fun play on an easy asymmetrical shawl design. No two shawls will be the same, as the roll of a die determines the length of each section to be knit.

Beautiful young Black woman modeling Mother of Motors shawl in indie dyed yarn from Why Knot Fibers; knitting pattern by Knitdraper; found in Nomadic Knits creative knitting magazine

Mother of Motors from issue seven : michigan
Knitting pattern by Michelle Grace
Michigan indie yarn dyer: Why Knot Fibers

Michelle pays homage to Detroit, the Motor City, in this incredibly creative shawl design, featuring three colorways in DK weight yarn. Think beautifully outside the box as you knit through this delightful pattern.

Snoqualmie from issue eight : washington
Knitting pattern by Dominique Trad
Washington indie yarn dyer: Spincycle Yarns

Dom’s stunning stitch patterns mixed with frequent color changes keep you engaged from start to finish. Spincycle’s Dream State in worsted makes this fly off the needles so you can add it to your wardrobe asap.

Kick the Dust Up from issue ten : texas
Knitting pattern by Cally Monster
Texas indie dyed yarn by Suburban Stitcher

Cally knocked it out of the park with this amazing shawl. A wonderful project for advanced knitters, Kick the Dust Up is filled with cables, lace, and textures galore. It’s Texas, so, of course, it’s finished with delicious fringe!

Everything Else

We’ve got a few more accessories up our sleeves with mitts, legwarmers, even a scrunchie!

Mackinac Mitts from issue seven : michigan
Knitting pattern by Kate Atherley
Michigan indie yarn dyer: Mint Rain and Aquarius Make

Small and squishy, these mitts are the perfect mid-season accessory. Just heavy enough to keep you warm without any bulk, they cover the delicate parts of your wrists that aren’t quite covered by your sleeves. Knit them for everyone!

Winterset from issue nine : iowa / nebraska
Knitting Pattern by Susanne Talluri
Iowa indie yarn dyer: Hansen Hand Dyes

Cables, cables, and more cables. Legwarmers make great gifts and are a fun alternative to sock knitting if you aren’t inspired by tiny circumferences and heel turns.

Windows to My Sole Scrunchie from issue eleven : head over heels
Knitting pattern by Melissa Kemmerer
Maryland indie yarn dyer: Plied

Hands down and ponytails up, this is the perfect gift for your knitworthy, fashion-conscious teen.
