NK Summer Knitalong

Introducing our NK Summer KAL!

Who: Knitters! This knitalong is appropriate for adventurous beginners and up, and includes a variety of Nomadic Knits designs.

What: A fun knitalong including our DK accessories designs! Choose from our brand-new Huskers Hat, Don’t Be A Square, or Winterset Legwarmers designs from issue nine : nebraska / iowa; Jodi Brown’s Higgins Lake Hat or Laura Dobratz’s Third Coast Cowl from issue seven : michigan; Jodi’s Herrington Hat or Laura Aylor’s Dandelion Mittens from issue four : maryland / dc / virginia; Beautifully Basic Hat from issue two : new york state. Whew! That’s quite the list! Follow this link to see all of the designs in one spot.

Where: In our Facebook group, Knit the World, and on Instagram using #NKSummerKAL (make sure to use the hashtag in at least one post in our FB group, or at least one public post on IG to enter to win prizes).

When: June 6th to August 1st. What’s special about those dates? June 6th is Becky’s birthday and August 1st is Melissa’s! It’s a birthday to birthday bash! Just don’t ask how old we are 😉

Why: To be part of something fun with a wonderful group of fellow knitters. Accessories are a great summer knitting project – they’re lightweight, easy to carry around, and don’t smother you in wooly insulation on those hot days. It’s also a great time of year to bust out a few holiday gifts for your knitworthy loved ones, or add to your own winter accessories wardrobe. And there will be prizes, of course!

How: Choose which pattern you’d like to knit from this list. The Beautifully Basic Hat is a forever-freebie, and the others are all available for purchase in print or digital format from our website or Ravelry.

Choose your yarn and pom poms (and do a little happy dance):

Go stash diving or treat yourself to a specially curated kit. We teamed up with Jessica of Lazy Bee Yarn and to offer kits in the original Huskers Hat colorways from issue nine : iowa / nebraska, as well as several other combinations that we’ve put together. If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll recognize Melissa’s love of jewel tones and neon pink (have you seen the Lazy Bee Magenta colorway next to the Pink Highlighter pom? A. Maze. Ing.), and Becky’s beautiful selections of more subtle earthy tones, like the lovely original Valkyrie and Sandstone combination.

Do a little spring cleaning in your deep stash; use up those DK leftovers for colorwork, and reward yourself with a gorgeous pom, or make one yourself using scrap yarn and just a piece of cardboard (Melissa will post a video tutorial at the start of the KAL).

Gather your needles and notions.

Check your gauge.

Wait enthusiastically for cast-on day, and share your colorway combinations with us on Facebook and Instagram using #NKSummerKAL.

Finally,

Have fun, pour a drink (water, tea, coffee, cocktail, straight alcohol – no matter your jam, all and more are welcome), and relax. At the end of the day, it’s just sticks and string, and it’s just one project. Our group is not spammy, and our only true hard-fast rule is to be kind. Any unkind members will be booted immediately, without a second chance. General snark is accepted and even encouraged, but personal or political snark or racism of any kind are an absolute no-go.

If you’ve read this far, but are feeling overwhelmed at the thought of doing one more thing, or knitalongs just aren’t your thing, join in as a cheerleader! Becky knit the beautiful Huskers Hat samples shown in Valkyrie and Sandstone, so she’ll be cheerleading while Melissa casts on hers with Magenta and Midnight’s Cloak. Throw out a like or a love or even a comment here and there to encourage your fellow knitters; it’s been a rough year and we could all use a little more joy!
